Celebrate Dad! Celebrate Summer!
What better way to celebrate the beginning of summertime reading than by sharing a book with Dad? To celebrate Father’s Day, sit back and enjoy one of these terrific books. Enjoy this June together reading and sharing some special family time.
Blue-Ribbon Dad
(Abrams Books for Young Readers, $14.95; ages 2-6) by Beth Raisner Glass. As a little boy waits for his dad to come home from work, he works on a special project—a blue-ribbon decorated just for his dad. He appreciates all the special things his dad does for him, like helping him tie his shoes, packing his lunch, and helping him with his homework. For this special Dad, a special surprise is needed! A special blue-ribbon for you to punch out and give your own blue-ribbon Dad is even included. Charming!
Daddy Adventure Day
(Philomel Books/Penguin, $15.99; ages 3-7) by Dave Keane. When a boy and his dad go on an adventure at the ball park, the fun never stops! The rules for “Daddy Adventure Day” are priceless—no reading the paper, no working, and of course, all the attention goes to the boy. From spills to thrills, you’ll want to be along for the whole adventure! Daddy adventure day is a perfect read for Father’s Day and it might just get you started on an adventure tradition of your own!
Pretend
(Philomel Books/Penguin, $15.99; ages 4-8) by Jennifer Plecas. Spend a day with Jimmy and his dad pretending—a couch becomes a boat, the stairs lead up a hill where they build a fort, and dog leashes help them “fish” for a snack. Vivid, vibrant illustrations complement the text that highlights a warm relationship between Jimmy and his dad. A great day pretending and a great look at how spending a day together just enjoying each other’s company can be quite a day. Delightful!
Tyrannosaurus Dad
(Roaring Brook Press, $16.99; ages 4-7) by Liz Rosenberg. If your dad was a Tyrannosaurus Rex, do you think life would be normal around your house? Well, for Tobias, most things are normal; his dad works a lot and collects big books of corny jokes. But, at forty feet long and 15 feet high, Tobias’ Tyrannosaurus dad’s resemblances to other dads are a bit slim. When field day comes, Tobias isn’t sure his dad will be there, but he shows up and saves the day when the “Chickenbone Gang” is being mean at the baseball game. When a T-Rex is reffing, no one dares to talk back. Tobias’ Dad helps out in so many other ways at Field Day as well! Tobias is glad his dad was there for Field Day—family first! Even for Tyrannosaurus dad! Fabulous!
RRRalph
(Beach Lane Books, $17.99; ages 3-7) by Lois Ehlert. How is your dog this summer? Does he talk? If your canine seems a bit human, this book is for you. Bright, bold cut paper illustrations and simple, engaging text make this the perfect summer book for young dog lovers! They will be convinced their dog is talking—just like RRRalph!
The Warlock: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel
(Delacorte Press, $18.99; ages 12 and up) by Michael Scott. The Fifth book in the series, “The Warlock” doesn’t disappoint. If you haven’t started this series yet, or you aren’t quite up to book five, summer is a great time to get caught up. Join Josh and Sophie for another breakneck adventure as they rush to save the world. Josh has chosen to side with Sinister Doctor Dee and stand against Sophie, his twin. As the magical twins of prophecy, one is chosen to save the world and one to end it, which is which? Only time will tell. This fifth book takes the reader through many Shadow Realms and battles for a breath-taking journey. The series will finish next summer, 2012 with the sixth book. Who can wait?
