Go Batty for Great Books this Halloween!

Halloween brings back so many memories.  My favorite costume was the refrigerator my son made out of a moving box, complete with an opening door with a bag attached inside for his candy! I hope you all enjoy making new memories this year.  Until then, enjoy reading some of these great Halloween books!

Frangoline and the Midnight Dream
(Chicken House/Scholastic, $16.00; ages 3-7) by Clemency Pearce. Frangoline is as good as gold during the day, but when she puts on her velvet cape and goes out into the night–watch out! Frangoline escapes into the night, wakes fierce creatures, dances on tombstones, and wakes up the ghouls in the cemetery. The moon warns her, but Frangoline doesn’t listen until finally the ghouls chase her right up to the moon! Will they let her travel safely back to bed? Travel to the moon and back and find out!

Haunted House, Haunted Mouse
(Holiday House, $16.95; ages 4-8) by Judy Cox. Join Mouse for a Halloween adventure that begins when he jumps in a trick-or-treat bag and joins in for a trick-or-treating trip with the kids in the family! Mouse loves the candy, but when he wants to see out, he makes a peek-a-boo hole in the sack and candy falls out. As the night’s adventure continues, Mouse gets seasick and escapes through the hole just when it starts to rain. Mouse seeks refuge in what seems to be a haunted house, but later follows the candy trail home! Delightful!

Little Goblins Ten
(Harper, $16.99; ages 3-7) by Pamela Jane. Join “little monster one” and his mother “over in the forest” to find mummies moaning, dragons breathing, and goblins leaping.  Energetic, colorful illustrations fill this Halloween version of “Over in the Meadow.” Children will soon recognize the tune and enjoy hearing and then reading and maybe even singing along with this book with you again and again! Fun!

Mouse and Mole: A Perfect Halloween
(Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, $14.99; ages 5-8) by Wong Herbert Yee. Mouse and Mole are great friends, but they just don’t quite agree on Halloween. Mouse loves Halloween and Mole thinks it is a bit too scary. However, Mole really wants to enter the pumpkin carving contest—that’s not too scary. Can Mouse convince Mole to have a happy Halloween? Join Mouse and Mole in this book for a series of fun Halloween stories as they figure out how to add just the perfect amount of scariness to Halloween!

The Haunted Hamburger and Other Ghostly Stories
(Dutton Children’s Books, $16.99; ages 6-8) by David La Rochelle. What is scary to ghosts? Why stories about people of course! The three stories told by Father Ghost to his children at bedtime in this book will have everyone giggling. These “people” stories will crack children up–the ghost children are scared of these “people stories,” just as children are scared of “ghost” stories. A wonderful new perspective! Charming!

Wicked Cool Friendship Bracelets
(Klutz, $16.99; ages 8 and up) by Karen Phillips. With creepy designs and wicked cool charms included, this book is just perfect for Halloween! Directions and supplies are included to make bracelets such as a “bitten” bracelet complete with a bat charm, a “cobweb” bracelet, and even a “snake charmer” bracelet. Spooky cord, beads, and charms are included with this book and are sure to make this an instant Halloween hit!
