The thought of Thanksgiving probably calls to mind turkey with all the trimmings, Pilgrims and American Indians, more than it does the idea of being ecologically conscious. Still, it isn't difficult to have a Thanksgiving that is true to family tradition and friendly to the environment.
Go Organic! An organic, free-range turkey is the ideal main course, but if one is not available, why not make as much of your meal as possible with organic items? Organic food should be bought from local farmers if possible, but it is more readily available at supermarkets now than in the past.
Decorate with Nature! Step out into the backyard and gather fall leaves, pinecones, and flowers, such as mums. Bring the beauty of autumn to your Thanksgiving celebration.
Dishing it Up! Now is the time to actually use that heirloom china and silver that Grandma left you instead of paper or plastic plates and utensils. However, if you can't bear the thought of all that dishwashing, look into biodegradable or bamboo disposable dinnerware.
Plan Ahead! Thanksgiving leftovers can be a treat! Turkey soup is delicious days later, and can be made in a crockpot.
With a little extra thought, you and your family can enjoy a green Thanksgiving.
