Green Living: You Can Save Our Creeks and Streams

green_living

Storm drains. They are something that most people don't really think about. They are there in our neighborhoods and throughout our cities, keeping our streets free from excessive water.

However, most folks don't think about what destination is on the other end of those drains-creeks and streams. Everything dumped in a storm drain ends up in one of these. The dumping of trash and toxic items into any city's storm drains can harm the water quality and natural wildlife in our streams.

This problem exists in all of our area cities. Now, you can help! The City of Lawton is asking citizens, civic clubs, schools, scouting groups and other organizations to lend a hand with storm water quality management.

One way to help is by marking storm drains. This project consists of volunteers affixing plastic markers with a "No Dumping-Keep Our Water Clean" message to storm drain inlets or curbs. The effort will focus on known problem areas and older areas of Lawton.
Another program that is underway is the stream clean-up project. This program helps to improve water quality and the aquatic habitats of area streams, as well as promoting storm water awareness.

Your group can pick where it wants to work, or the city will assign you to an area that is heavily impacted by trash-usually one that has heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

If your family or organization is interested in helping with one of these projects, contact the City of Lawton's Stormwater Quality Management Division at 580.581.3478. The city will provide the materials needed to perform the tasks and help you get started.
Remember, storm drainage problems affect all of our area creeks and streams, so if you live outside of Lawton, why not call your local city government and see if you can help in your community?
